The emergence of this town is closely linked to the sugar plantation and its inhabitants, a result of the sweat paid in the cane fields, are bearers of the rich traditions of their Spanish, African, French, Haitian and Chinese ancestors.

Sugar production is present in the Palmillas judicial party in 1784, through a small mill whose main production was scrapes and honeys.

In 1798 Monte Alto was a small batey where sugar was also produced in a sugar mill named “Raspadura”, where there was only one tile house owned by Don Juan López.
